Dear Birthmother,

We are so grateful that you are considering us as potential adoptive parents. While we realize that this decision is likely very difficult, we want to honor your courage and bravery as you make this choice.

We are Sam and Jess, and we both knew we wanted to adopt before we were dating! If we were going to have kids, this was always Plan A for us. We have many family and friends who have adopted, and we've even been able to walk with some of them through the process!

About Us

We met in college back in 2009 when we were volunteering for the same youth mentoring program. We quickly became good friends and stayed friends for 6 years, adamantly saying we would never date! But summer of 2015 rolled around, and we both, around the same time, began to like the other more than friends. We decided to secretly date for a little while to see if we could transition from a friendship to a relationship. Long story short, we started dating in December of 2015, were engaged by October of 2016 and got married in May of 2017!

Sam is a Software Engineer, and Jess is currently an Office Coordinator earning her Master's in Social Work in order to become a therapist. In our free time, we like to go hiking, have bonfires, spend time with our friends and family, watch sports and go to concerts. We love our sweet dogs, Lucille and Honey, who were both moms before we adopted them and still have their motherly instincts when children are at our home. They are as sweet as can be and great with children of all ages.

We are very lucky to have many people we love nearby us. Monthly, we get together with a large group of our friends, most of which have many children, for a potluck. We also have friends outside of that group that we see more frequently and have gone on vacations with.

We enjoy traveling around the US, with our goal being to travel to a new state every year together. So far, our favorites are South Carolina and California. We have also taken road trips with our dogs as far as Tennessee and as close as the North Shore of Minnesota.

A lot of our free time is spent rooting for our Minnesota sports teams from watching the Vikings at home on Sunday afternoons to cheering on the Minnesota Aurora at one of their home games. We go to games whenever we can! Sam has participated in weightlifting competitions and exercises multiple times a week in our garage gym. Jess enjoys doing yoga and taking the dogs on long walks.

We also enjoy going to concerts and comedy shows from seeing our favorite alternative rock band to finding hidden gem entertainers. Jess is a part of the Twin Cities Women’s choir, where she enjoys singing with over 120 other women.

Our Home

We live within the city limits of Minneapolis, Minnesota in a very diverse area and neighborhood. We have people, genuinely, from all races, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages and ethnicities in the blocks surrounding our home. There are several parks within walking distance, and the elementary school is about 4 blocks away from our home. Both of our neighbors on each side of our home have young children.

Living in the city means we have a pretty small yard. But the woman who lived in our home before us was very committed to gardening and left us a gorgeous, lush yard filled with daffodils, tulips, hydrangeas, lilacs, ferns and rhubarb. Even though it is small, we enjoy it very much. The nursery space is right across from our primary bedroom, so the baby's room is just a few steps away from our room!

Our Extended Family

Jess is from a small town in Northern Minnesota where much of her extended family still lives. Her sister and her brother and his family both live very close by, so we are able to see them quite frequently. Jess's family does holidays (Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas) knowing exactly who will be there, what they will bring, and what time the festivities begin!

Sam is also from a small town in Northern Minnesota. His dad, sister and her family, and cousin and her children (one of which is adopted) live in Sam's hometown. Usually, we will visit Sam's family every few months in addition to celebrating holidays there every other year.

Our Family Traditions

Jess's family has a yearly fish fry where everyone gets together in the summer, plays games, and eats lots of fresh caught fish. Her cousins and brother on her dad's side have 11 children of varying ages who are running around, climbing trees and playing games with the adults. It's always a day we look forward to. Jess's parents are very involved, and her mom plans to help us a lot once we adopt!

A tradition Sam’s family just started last year is to celebrate his late mother’s birthday every spring with her side of the family. This celebration includes Sam’s aunts, uncles, cousins and their children.

What Led Us To Adoption

We both knew we wanted to adopt, even before we started dating. Adoption is the only way we ever planned to expand our family. This is our Plan A!
